Hoof Growth, Strength & Quality

Farrier's Formula® Double Strength

Description
Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength is a pelleted hoof supplement that can be added as a top dressing on the regular feed or given separately. It provides nutrients such as phospholipids, omega fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and important amino acid “protein building blocks” for a healthy hoof and hair coat. These nutrients are provided at twice the concentration compared to original Farrier’s Formula®.

Over 30 years of research, clinical trials and field testing validate the effectiveness of Farrier’s Formula®.

Problems it Addresses
Weak hoof structure leads to hoof wall problems such as quarter cracks, toe cracks, sand cracks, brittle hoof walls and hoof wall separation. These hoof wall defects often create an environment ideal for the microbial invasions associated with white line disease and crumbling horn. Also addressed are horses with thin soft soles that are susceptible to sudden lameness from bruising, and horses recovering from laminitis or founder whose cohesive bond between the outer hoof wall and the coffin bone has been damaged.

The Solution
Farrier’s Formula® supplies the nutrients required for building strong hoof capsule connective tissue in the correct balance and ratio. It also promotes strong and fast growth of the hoof wall, sole, frog, and heel. Farrier’s Formula® provides proper nutrition to “grow out” wall cracks, strengthen and thicken the hoof wall and sole, reduce the likelihood of microbial invasions and bruising, and assist with laminitis recovery. Farrier’s Formula® also promotes a glossy more deeply colored coat and strengthened connective tissues of the joints and ligaments.

  • Twice the number of daily doses compared to original Farrier’s Formula®
  • A 60 day supply for a 1000 lb horse at the Adult Replenishment Feeding Level or a 120 day supply when feeding at the Adult Maintenance Feeding Level

Guidelines for Feeding the Hoof

Replenishment Feeding Level vs. Maintenance Feeding Level.
The length of time Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength should be given at the replenishment level is determined by the initial problem to be solved. With hoof problems, it is advisable to continue the Replenishment Feeding Level until the foot is completely remodeled (9 to 12 months), even though one will begin to observe denser hoof growth below the coronary band within two months.

Feed intake can sometimes be reduced when feeding Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength.
According to field reports feeding Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength allows the horse to utilise its feed intake more efficiently. Horses supplemented with Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength should be monitored for weight gain and, if necessary, the feeding amounts of grain, not Farrier’s Formula®, should be adjusted appropriately. Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength does not contain any added sugars or molasses, and the starch and carbohydrate content are very low.

Combine Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength with Farrier’s Finish® for Total Hoof Care.
Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength provides the nutrients for healthy hoof growth from the inside. Farrier’s Finish® destroys “hoof eating” microbes while maintaining correct hoof capsule moisture balance.

Bran should not be fed to horses with poor hoof quality.
Bran and other hull material of grain contain phytates. Phytates are high in phosphorus and can block the absorption of calcium and other minerals in the small intestine. Diets high in bran and other grain by-products can create the low calcium levels that are detrimental to hoof condition. Published scientific research (Kempson BSc, PhD 1987) demonstrated the ultra structural changes to the hoof wall caused by calcium deficiency related to the feeding of bran to the adult horse.

There is little margin for error when supplementing selenium.
A horse’s daily requirement for selenium is only a few milligrams less than the level of selenium that creates chronic selenium toxicity. A lack of copper in the diet increases the risk of selenium toxicity. There is no evidence or research that a selenium deficiency affects hoof structure. However, selenium excess and chronic selenium toxicities are well documented in the development of lameness, hoof defects, and poor hoof wall structure.

Too much sulphur in the diet can be detrimental to hoof quality.
Sulphur is an important nutrient for connective tissue strength and joint health. Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength contains the ingredient methionine (a sulphur containing amino acid) which supplies the correct amount of sulphur for joint and hoof health. Joint supplements often contain MSM, an ingredient that contains sulphur, and can lead to over supplementation of sulphur when combined with other products. Utilize joint supplements that do not contain MSM when feeding other sulphur containing products such as Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength.

Positive Results of Feeding Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength

Initial Results
Within as little as two weeks of feeding Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength one should see a glossy, more deeply colored coat. By nine to ten weeks a new band of strong, healthy growth will be clearly visible at the coronary band, and the difference in the structure of the hom in the periople can be seen with the naked eye. Internal benefits, while more difficult to see, are just as dramatic.

Feeding to Improve
The length of time Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength should be given at the replenishment level is determined by the initial problem to be solved. If the goal is to improve health and appearance of the skin and hair, replenishment level should be continued for approximately one to two months. If the goal is to grow a long and flowing healthy mane and tail, the replenishment level should be fed until the mane and tail reach the desired length. The time required to completely remodel the wall, sole, and frog of the foot is approximately 9-12 months. Therefore, it is best to continue at the replenishment level until the foot is completely remodeled even though one will begin to see some difference in the hoof within two months.

Feeding to Maintain
In the above cases, once desired results are obtained, usually the feeding amount can be reduced by one half in order to maintain the desired condition. Each horse will be somewhat different. For example, some thoroughbreds and warm bloods may require the replenishment level continuously. Arabians and Arabian crosses may sometimes be maintained on 1/2 cup per day. It is important to keep all horses on a maintenance level to maintain good hoof health. Usually the same thing (genetic, environmental, and management factors) that caused the problem in the beginning will be present throughout the horse’s life. If one does not see the beginning of the expected results after feeding Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength for a period of eight to ten weeks, the indication is that other factors can be involved in addition to nutrition.

The additional problems could include genetics, environmental, and management. In the interest of solving the problems in a timely manner, Life Data Labs should be contacted immediately to speak with our nutrition consultants in order to determine a course of action. Satisfied customers worldwide report up to a 25% improvement in feed efficiency after feeding Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength. This is likely due to better digestion and utilization of the feedstuff resulting from the nutrients in Farrier’s Formula® Double Strength.

Crude Protein and Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength

Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength is 27% protein. The protein in Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength is derived from three main sources. A main ingredient and the largest contributor of protein is soy protein concentrate, which contains 66 % protein. Methionine, yeast culture, and to a lesser degree alfalfa also contribute to crude protein levels.

A horse consuming 11 lbs. of a 13% protein feedstuff per day is consuming 650 grams of protein per day, and this is often a poor quality protein. Add 20 lbs. of hay or equivalent pasture and the horse consumes approximately 2000 grams of crude protein per day.

In comparison, a ½ cup (85 gram) serving of Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength provides only 23 grams of protein per day – an insignificant level of protein compared to the total daily intake of crude protein.

Crude protein is calculated from a measurement of the amount of nitrogen in the feedstuff. Amino acids contain nitrogen and are therefore labeled as “crude protein”.

Amino acids combine together to form protein, and are therefore the building blocks of protein. Poor quality proteins may contain an abundance of some amino acids, but a deficiency of other amino acids. The lack of an amino acid blocks the formation of a protein that requires that particular amino acid.

High quality protein diets contain amino acids that are present in sufficient quantities and proper ratios for the efficient formation of protein. Soy protein concentrate is high in the amino acids that are often the most deficient in an equine diet, so when soy protein concentrate is supplemented these amino acids increase the utilization of other amino acids in the diet.

For example, lysine is an amino acid that is present in less than ideal amounts in hay and pasture grasses, and therefore deficient in most horses’ diets. Lysine is the “weak link” and prevents other amino acids in the diet from being utilized to build tissue proteins. Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength contains relatively high levels of lysine, improving the utilization of other dietary proteins by providing this “weak link” amino acid. The lysine in Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength is derived from the soy protein concentrate.

Methionine, another example of an amino acid weak in typical equine diets, is added to Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength to provide building blocks for strong connective tissue growth. Methionine, like lysine and the other amino acids, adds to the “crude protein” levels that are reported on the product label.

Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength does not create the “hot” horse that is associated with high protein feedstuffs.

Farrier’s Formula®Double Strength fortifies the nutrients important for a healthy hoof that are weak in the diet, including amino acids and nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, phospholipids, and fatty acids
